Hoa Lu Ancient Capital lies within the limestone landscape of Ninh Binh, where mountains and waterways formed a naturally defended royal centre. It became the capital of Dai Co Viet under King Dinh Tien Hoang in the 10th century and remained closely associated with the Early Le dynasty before the capital later moved to Thang Long, present-day Hanoi.
Although little remains of the original citadel, the surviving temples, gates, courtyards and archaeological setting preserve the story of this formative period in Vietnamese history.
