Reunification Palace was originally built in the 1860s as the Norodom Palace and later replaced in 1962 with a modernist structure designed by architects Ngô Viết Thụ and Huỳnh Văn Yên. The palace served as the seat of the President of South Vietnam and as a venue for official receptions, state functions, and military planning during the Vietnam War era.
The palace is most famous as the location where a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed through its gates on 30 April 1975, symbolising the fall of Saigon and the end of the war. Today, the building stands as a museum preserving period rooms, meeting halls, and command centres, offering visitors a powerful insight into Vietnam’s recent history, political change, and daily life of leaders during a pivotal era.
